Before deciding to place a saddle on a horse with the intention of riding, here are 5 golden guidelines worth following to ensure a pleasurable and less stressful horse riding experience:
#1. The Basic Anatomy Of a Horse
Just as we have a larger number of humans who are right-handed, most horses are left-handed animals [at least the ones we ride on]. This comes as a result of consistent and continuous use of the horse from the left-hand side to the right-hand side. Think about it for a moment, we mount up a horse [most of the time] from the left-hand side, placing our left leg first on the stir-up pad, and then exerting a considerable amount of pressure on the horse for a lift. Then our right leg moves across the horse just to be placed on the other stir-up pad [with little or no effort at all]. Having this done repeatedly over a long period of time enhances the left side of the horse considerably more when compared to the right side.
#2. Get To Know This Yourself
Check the mane of the horse. If the mane falls from the left side to the right side that infers the horse to be typically left-handed, and right-handed if it is the other way round. To finally confirm this, move behind the horse [make sure the horse is standing square], look down the mid-line of the horse with a centered head and check which shoulder appears physically larger. The larger shoulder indicates consistent use, hence will be the main side the horse uses the most. For a complete labeled diagram of a horse, visit the pony club site listed below. This will give a better view of the parts mentioned like the mane, shoulder etc.
#3. Saddles Are Made Even, Horses Are Not
When putting a saddle on an uneven horse, make sure the saddle is placed a full-palm or a full-fist away from the shoulder blade of the horse [when stretched], starting around its withers. This prevents the saddle from resting on the shoulders [which are not even], ensuring the larger shoulder does not push the saddle off center. This also helps prevent spinal problems for both the horse and its rider.
#4. Avoid Placing The Saddle On This Spot
Cranial nerves are nerves that emerge directly from the brain stem in contrast to spinal nerves which emerge from segments of the spinal cord.
The eleventh Cranial nerve [otherwise known as Cranial nerve 11] is located just behind the shoulder blade of the horse and should be avoided at all cost. Placing a saddle on this cranial nerve triggers a sudden spike of reflective action, which in turn agitates the horse thereby making it act a bit rash.
#5. Do Not Let The Saddle Go Beyond The 18th Rib Of The Horse
Lastly, when placing a saddle on a horse, the rear part of the saddle should not extend beyond the 18th rib of the horse. This is quite hard to explain in words: For a 2-minute video showing off this description, visit e-horseridingsaddles.com
