Those needing protection from the danger of fire don't all require the same level of protection. By choosing fire resistant clothing carefully and layering pieces, workers can achieve a maximum level of comfort while also increasing safety.
Lightweight Layer
Fire resistant clothing can be lightweight and not restrictive or bulky. Today's fabric provides a significant amount of fire protection, even when worn in thin layers. The materials available are as comfortable as cotton and feel nice and soft up against your skin.
Lightweight fire resistant clothing, also known as silkweight, is designed to be worn under other types of flame retardant clothes, fire protection gear, or protective equipment like industrial hazard suits and military body armor. Pieces can range from t-shirts and long pants to boxer shorts. In addition to providing fire protection, these garments make other PPE even more comfortable because of the wicking material used.
Midweight Layer
A little heavier in weight, midweight FR clothing feels much like normal, everyday clothing. It feels and looks like an outfit you might buy in a regular store at the mall, but with the additional benefit of being made with fire resistant material. Many companies use this weight material to design flame resistant uniforms for guarding workers against fire while also being comfortable and pleasing to wear.
A midweight layer can also be used with other equipment like a bulletproof vest or a firefighter's turnout gear. The material is soft and it cushions heavy equipment that puts safety over the comfort of the wearer. The material wicks away moisture, helping to keep workers dry and cool as the perspiration from activities performed while wearing heavy equipment is intense.
Heavyweight Layer
Using a heavier material in the making of fire resistant clothing serves two purposes. First, it provides the maximum amount of fire protection over lighter materials, but doesn't provide the bulk of full firefighting gear. Many times, workers don't need full fireproofing and a heavyweight layer can keep them safe while providing full freedom of movement so their clothing doesn't interfere with their jobs. A heavier weight garment also meets higher testing standards and is more equipped to handle protection from Arc flash and heavy flames.
Secondly, heavyweight fire retardant clothes provide excellent protection against cold and freezing weather. A jacket made with a fire resistant fabric keeps the wearer warm while also providing fire safety. Since fire retardant fabric is fast drying, it provides extra protection against the cold. If a person gets wet when exposed to cold, the clothing will wick away the moisture fast, ensuring the garment's insulation ability.
To provide the ultimate in safety, consider a full set of fire resistant clothing, from underwear to outer jacket. Even though a worker is fully protected through a number of fire resistant layers, these garments look and function like regular clothing. They are safe, comfortable, and allow a worker to effectively focus on their important job.
