Horses are great animals that carry themselves with pride and grace. No wonder that many people attach special significance of owning and riding these wonderful animals. They need a lot of free open space to roam and that is true in cooler and wetter climates too. So how do you protect the horses during such seasons? Turnout rug is your solution : they can protect in cold winters and also in wet rains.

There are different grades of these rugs available which you can choose depending on your needs. There are the heavy weight rugs that have over 0.3kg filling to keep the horse warm in real cold wintery conditions. The medium grade rugs have between 0.15 to 0.3kg filling and the lightweight ones have up to 0.15kg filling. The lighter grades are good for summer and to protect against rains while the medium is for cool conditions. So depending on the weather in your area you can choose one of these.

If you live up north where you get everything from rains to real cold and dark winters, you would need different set of rugs for each season. This is not practical as you really cannot invest in multiple rugs. An good alternative in that case is to purchase under rugs. These are not as expensive as your turnout rugs and when used with a lightweight rug can serve as a heavyweight rug too. Just add as many layers of these under rugs are your feel necessary and cover them with a lightweight rug.

These turnout rugs tend to have pretty decent waterproofing features. So you really do not need to focus on that aspect. However, it is always better to go for a rug that has pretty durable water proofing so that you do not have to keep recoating it every season. The next important part is the comfort of the animal wearing these rugs.

To address the comfort aspect, some rugs are designed in multiple pieces. There are separate pieces for the neck, hind legs and one large piece covering the rest of the body. If you are looking at this option, make sure that the large piece of the rug is large enough to overlap with the smaller pieces. The ultimate aim is that horse is covered completely without any gaps.

If you are using a single specially designed rug, you must get a decent sized one. The rug must not be too lose, neither too tight. The horse needs to be able to move as it would do naturally, it is just supposed to get some warmth with the rug.

One of the problems with using such rugs is that the horse may graze near the fence and branches which can tear the rug. The modern, good quality rugs that are rip resistant and you must always prefer these. These will ensure that they serve you well are deliver good value for money.

All in all, the turnout rug is a real boon to the horse owners. They can protect the animal in rough weather and not restrain it. If picked properly, these rugs can serve you for years with minimum problems and great comfort to the horse.
