Many times parents are concerned with what is the typical development and behavior of a healthy and/or normal 1-2 year old. In this article we will discuss 4 things to expect that, in general, applies to children of this age.

Your Child Gets Better At Grasping and Holding Things

Children in the age rage of 1 and 2 will be eager to want to hold things with his or her hands. They will attempt to hold whatever they are strong enough to lift (i.e. Toys, spoons, cups, etc.). The child will also attempt to manipulate things with his or her hands such as doorknobs, and turning pages of books. The child will touch light switches and even will attempt to squeeze toothpaste out of the tube.

Although this occurs, just remember that you child does not yet understand how to use any of the things that the child's hand is manipulating. He or she is sampling figuring out how his or her hands work and how they can be used.

2) Use Words and Then Simple Sentences

"No!" may be a favorite word around this time in the child's life. This is a normal way for the child to learn how to say "I" and to become independent. Your child is not trying to misbehave or frustrate you. He or she may even say no and do what you just asked the child to do.

3) Express Feelings in Physical Ways

Your child will show anger, frustration and other feeling by acting them out. They will do so by yelling or crying, throwing temper tantrums, biting, as well as pushing or shoving. This is a very common way for the child to express his or her feelings because the child doesn't have enough vocabulary to talk it out.

4) Cannot Understand or Remember Rules

Although your child may follow a simple direction during the exact moment you give that particular direction. However, he or she probably won't remember the next time. So for example, when it comes to your child pulling the cats tail, your 1-2 year old will need constant, yet gentle reminders each time of doing the act in order to know that he or she is not allowed to do it.

These four things you can expect from you child as he or she is learning how to manipulate the material world as a 1-2 year old. Although some of these behavior can cause confusion and frustration, these new behaviors and development will become apparent during the first 2 years of life.
