Introduction
U.S. citizens find the U.S. Virgin Islands an attractive choice for a vacation because of great weather, duty-free shopping and the fact that they don't need a passport to visit there.
The limit on duty free shopping is about twice as high as other destinations. As a result, shopping makes U.S.V.I. a popular stopover for cruise ships, with total cruise visitors about three times as high as people who visit the islands for a long-term stay.
The nearby British Virgin islands have the same weather but are more attractive for long-term stays.
Average Weather
The average monthly high temperature for the Virgin Islands is nearly 88 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low temperature is 75 degrees, according to the Southeast Regional Climate Center. The average temperatures vary little from month to month, like most Caribbean destinations.
The average rainfall is 3.2 inches per month but varies widely throughout the year. The Virgin Islands have more rain per month than most destinations, but they don't have the extremes each month that others receive.
Best and Worst Months
The maximum temperatures reach an average low of 85 degrees for December through March and an average high of more than 90 degrees in July and August.
Average rainfall is less than 2 inches a month from January through March. More than five inches of rain falls in September, October and November during the most active months of the Caribbean hurricane season.
Because of these weather patterns, the most popular months for visits to the Virgin Islands are December through April, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. The least popular month because of heavy rainfall is September, followed by October and August.
