The Dreaded STI Test

Almost every website which deals with things such as STIs will say something along the lines of “Don't be scared or embarrassed about going to a GUM clinic. An STI is an illness like any other. You're looking after your body by going for a check-up.”
To put your mind at rest, once you’re 16, the Doctor has no right to tell your parents and can be filed under the usual data protection acts for doing so!
STI tests are often referred to as a scary experience and there are plenty of rumours going around these days, no… there is no umbrella, and no ladies… there is no clamp.
Hopefully, this article will put your mind at rest as I describe to you what really happens during an STI test!

Male;
First off, you’ll be asked various questions relating to your sex life, other health problems and any symptoms you might have.
The doctor will then proceed to check the penis head, neck and testicles for any of the symptoms of common STIs.
You’re then required to participate in a urine sample, a blood test (possibly) and a swab test
The swab test is the most feared part! The doctor or nurse will simply peel back the foreskin, part the eye slightly and then insert a thin cotton bud just inside, to take a swab. It should not be painful although it may feel uncomfortable at first.
Your results should be back within days.

Female;
First off, you’ll be asked various questions relating to your sex life, other health problems and any symptoms you might have.
At this point, you can request a female Doctor, and regardless of this, a female nurse will be present.
An internal examination will the be carried out, this is painless and you have no need to worry.
You’re then required to participate in a urine sample, a blood test (possibly) and a swab test.
The cotton bud for woman, will be swiped slowly across the inside of the vagina, near the cervix.
It should not be painful although it may feel uncomfortable at first.
Your results should be back within days.
