I'm a full time licensed auctioneer and eBay seller. My specialty is the antiques and collectibles arena.
For all the advertising I do in this business, it never ceases to amaze me when my no cost method of placing 'wanted to buy' ads brings home a whopper of a buy.
I'll tell you which method that was at the end of this article.
The story of my latest treasure trove this ad method yielded is as follows.
I got a call from a woman who said she got my number from a friend, and she was aware that I may be interested in buying some sheet music.
I told her I did, but that I also buy many types of collections and that I'd be happy to look at her's and make an offer if I was interested. She said if that were the case then she'd get some other things ready for me to look at as well.
Since the job was close I didn't ask too many qualifying questions. With the price of gas these days it's important for me to qualify any jobs over 25 miles away. The further the job, the more questions I ask. But this woman wasn't far, this is another benefit of my low cost ad method. I'll tell you what it is at the end of the post, but I'll give you a clue here. It cost about 5 cents!
I arrived and as expected the lady took me into her basement, one of my favorite places to be in any one's house
What I found there was one of the best collections I was able to purchase in quite some time.
I ended up buying a couple hundred pieces of antique Ruby Glass, some Sterling Silver, Jewelry and other items. I never did buy the Sheet Music, that particular collection wasn't right for me.
The Ruby glass and other items will be posted on eBay soon. I paid for the lot, and pulled my leads.
You pull leads don't you? You should, because it's the best way to get to find your next collection, the people you've just purchased from are happy because you've put money in their pocket and they will usually always come up with the phone # of a friend or two that they know has some treasures.
This works even better is if you can get them to call that friend right while your there to introduce you and possibly set up a meet.
Pulling leads, or getting referrals is job security for people who buy and sell, it's a must. The better you get at it the more money you make. Learn how to do it with tact and make it automatic at the end of every meeting, whether you buy or not.
OK, so now for my low tech method of advertising. I've been using this since I've been in the business, and by far it is the most consistent method of getting me lots of great items to resell.
It's the simple pull tab handbill that you post on bulletin boards near shopping centers, country stores and gas stations. This type of ad is working for you all the time and when you least expect it, you get a call from it.
If you word the ad right for the kinds of things you buy, you'll get quality calls. I guess since people take the time to pull that tab, tuck it away for later and call, they are more serious about selling what they have than someone who sees you ad in a newspaper or online.
Keep the ad simple, state what you buy, and the fact that you pay cash.
Make about 50 of these up and keep them in your car, post them at your leisure when your out and about.
Cost:
Sheet of paper and ink 2 cents.
Thumb tacks 3 cents.(don't forget to tack all 4 corners, store owners tear down the ones that flap in the wind)
Total cost is 5 cents!
Don't forget to shop the places that have bulletin boards and let the owners know that you appreciate it and it's one of the reasons you shop there. I'm am such a big user of these boards, that I make it a point to try to NOT shop at places that don't have them.
The Bulletin Board is a great American Democratic tradition that goes back to the beginning of this country when handbills were the only way to post important events.
When a merchant posts a bulletin board on their location it is a statement of respect for the community, and you should do your best to patronize that merchant.
