When installing a new tub or shower you want to make sure that it not only looks great for years to come, but that it is also safe and does not allow water to seep through the cracks or tile. Not properly waterproofing the tiles in your shower can lead to wood rot and can lead to a big and expensive mess down the road. Following the advice below will help to ensure that your tub and shower will stay dry underneath and so you won't have to worry about this mess.
When installing your new tub or shower pan you want to make sure that it includes a water resistant membrane from the stud that lies over the lip of the fixture. It is important to make sure that this membrane goes over the lip and not behind it. Putting it behind the lip will still allow water or moisture to seep onto the studs and wood and cause molding and/or rot. This will redirect the water that does get past the tile back into the shower or tub.
It will only take a few more minutes of your time to install these waterproof fabrics. You can use any type of plastic sheeting, certain felt papers, or you can buy actual waterproof underlayer materials.
Besides this additional step in redirecting the water just-in-case it seeps through, you will also want to make sure that the foundation of your new tub/shower tile is of a gypsum based product. Things like cement board, even if wet, will not damage or break down.
Be sure to install the cement board leaving some space between it and the tile fixture. As you stack the cement board on top of each other, it will create a natural gap that needs to then be filled with pure silicone caulk. Make sure to leave a few caulking gaps towards the top of the tub. This will just ensure that the water that does get through will drain back in towards the tub tile.
Following these tips will not break your bank or cause you much trouble to implement and can save you a load of trouble years down the road. Spending $25 - $75 extra now is much better than having to completely rip out and redo your shower a decade from now when the wood behind your shower begins to rot and mold. The price you pay now for the peace of mind you will receive is well worth the investment spent.
