Hyperthermia (heat exhaustion) is not all that common in horses but it does occur. Most horses are easily adaptable to changes in humidity and hot weather. If you are moving from a cooler climate to a warmer and more humid climate you should take it a bit easier on your horses until they get accustomed to the hot and humid weather. You will want to schedule your horses workouts in the early mornings or in the cooler evenings if at
all possible.
A horse with hyperthermia will appear weak, breathing will be rapid and panting, the muscles will twitch as in spasms and usually will collapse. At this time the horse will be sweating profusely and with a much higher heart rate. Heat exhaustion occurs slowly and may strike at anytime.
Prevention: All horses should have access to shade, whether standing under a tree or in the barn. On extremely hot days I cool my horses down with a hose, they are very eager and enjoy the coolness of the water and the relief from the hot summer days.
Access to clean, cool, fresh water is an absolute necessity. A horse can actually loose up to 4 gallons of sweat per workout so make sure your horse has access to a mineral salt block to replace the minerals lost during their exercise routine.
First Aid: Hyperthermia is a medical emergency! First you must lower your horses body temperature. Grab a hose and spray your horse with tepid water. Find some shade in the barn or under a tree and if you have access to a fan by all means use it. Have a friend call the veterinarian while you care for the horse, it is critical that you get your horse cooled down as soon as possible.
