How to get rid of pet smells caused by faeces or urine
Pets. We love having them in their homes, but at times things can start to feel a little unpleasant, particularly when visitors to your home start asking you whether you have a damp problem while a rather wet, smelly dog languishes in his basket in the corner (Looking not the least bit guilty too), or when you walk into the lounge on a summers morning, light streaming through the windows, only to be confronted with the smell of cat sick. Well, don't give up on your furry (Or feathered, or scaly) companions just yet –help to get rid of pet smells is just around the corner.
If your furniture is starting to whiff, try removing the slip cover (If there is one) and washing it once a week. You can also cover the furniture with a dryer sheet to keep it smelling fresh, or you can sprinkle talcum powder, corn starch or baking soda onto the furniture to keep those dastardly pet smells at bay. Vacuum clean after a few hours, and the powder will absorb the odours and keep your furniture smelling fresh.
The next culprit is perhaps the most unpleasant –pet vomit. The latest cleaning products to dispel this woof –sorry, whiff, use peroxide and detergents to deeply clean the area and deodorize. Use these according to instructions, but if that horrible pet smell simply will not budge, try saturating the area with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, before blotting with a clean white absorbent cloth, pressing down (Not rubbing) for thirty seconds, then blotting until dry. Baking soda is also one of those unlikely yet often used cleaning products for cleaning home. Use this to eliminate surface odours by dampening the area before sprinkling with baking soda. Rub into to area and allow to dry before using a brush or a vacuum cleaner to remove any excess dry material.
In the unfortunate event of house training not going entirely to plan, there are steps you can take to get rid of pet smells caused by faeces or urine. If your furry friend has decided to mark its territory on the living room rug, don't despair –clean it up while it is still wet, if you can, and make sure it's cleaned up properly –dogs like repeatedly urinating in the same places, and will often return to the scene of the crime. Rinse the area completely with cold water. There are some cleaning productsfor cleaning homewhich will be able to work on breaking the smell and the stain down completely, so ask your vet or pet store owner for tips on cleaning home from pet smells. This is particularly important when removing cat urine. Clean up pet mess immediately, removing any solid material before using an appropriate product to get rid of the stain and the odours.
Never use harsh chemicals on areas which you or your pet might use, and if possible try to find products or alternatives which will be safe for you and your pet –the likelihood is they will be environmentally friendly to boot, too. As well as this, keep your pet clean on a regular basis too. This will help to reduce pet smells on your furniture, carpet and upholstery and ensure that your home smells less like something the cat dragged in, and more like the cat's miaow.
